Psychiatry is a branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental and emotional disorders like affective, behavioral, cognitive and perceptual abnormalities. Psychiatric assessment typically starts with a mental status examination and the compilation of a case history. Psychological tests and physical examinations may be conducted. Professionals in this field are known as a Psychiatrist and Psychiatrist can differentiate between a mentally healthy person and a mentally sick one. Psychiatrists are qualified to assess both the mental and physical aspects of psychological disturbance and use a variety of treatments including psychotherapy, medication and other treatments.

Difference between Psychiatrist and Psychologist

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor with special training in psychiatry who is able to conduct psychotherapy and prescribe medications and other medical treatments.

 

A psychologist usually has an advanced degree, most commonly in clinical psychology, and often has extensive training in research. Psychologists treat mental disorders with psychotherapy and some specialize in psychological testing and evaluation.

Employment

Psychiatry graduates are employed in government hospitals as well as in mental hospitals, private hospitals, clinics and health institutes, and others with other occupational therapists and social workers, schools, colleges, prison and even for NGOs and large scale industries and also start private practice by opening their own clinics.
