Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine which is concerned with eye and its diseases related to eyes and visual system and also medicine dealing with the surgery and diseases of the visual pathways which includes the eye and brain. Ophthalmic is also the descriptive term used for the eye which also means anything related to ophthalmology. Professionals in this field are known as ophthalmologist.

Ophthalmologists perform operations on eyes, they are considered to be both surgical and medical specialists. An ophthalmologist examine, diagnose and treat diseases and injuries in and around the eye and also ophthalmologist corrects problems with the physical aspects of the eye including correcting vision, cataracts, glaucoma and other diseases. Ophthalmology technicians make eye glasses and contact lenses using orders from optometrists or ophthalmologists. Some also make lenses for cameras and microscopes.

Ophthalmology graduates are employed in government and private hospitals. They can start their own private eye-clinic, NGOs, private hospitals, clinics, missionary hospitals and charitable hospitals run by railways and defense, career in research or teaching area. There is huge demand for Indian ophthalmologists in abroad and Ophthalmologists have multiple career options.
