Merchant Navy deals with transporting cargo and occasionally, passengers, by sea and composed of passenger vessels, cargo liners, tankers, carriers, as well as other special types of vehicles. The primary function of the Merchant Navy is to transport goods from one place to another place. The main positions open in the merchant navy are for navigating officers, radio officers and marine engineers.

Some Duties and Responsibilities in Merchant Navy includes

1. Testing fire-fighting and life-saving equipment.

2. Routine mechanical and electrical maintenance.

3. Monitoring equipment controls.

4. Loading and unloading cargo.

5. Repairing and painting the ship's hull, fixtures and fittings.

6. Preparing meals in the galley and serving food and drinks.

7. Cleaning cabins, corridors and decks.

8. Stock control and re-ordering supplies.

 

Qualifications

1. Age should be below 25.

2. He should also pass a medical fitness test for sea service under standard norms and with     eyesight 6/6 with no color blindness.

3. The age limit is relax able by 2 years in case of female candidates.

4. Age relaxation of 5 years to SC/ST candidates will be available as per the rules of     Government of India.

 

Courses and Eligibility

1. The student must pass higher secondary education or 10+2 with any subjects to get     admission into a bachelor’s degree program.

2. Bachelor’s course in Nautical Science.

3. B.E in Marine Engineering.

 

Employment

Graduates in this field are employed in shipping companies on a contractual basis, of six to nine months duration. They work as navigating officers, radio officers and marine engineers.
