Medical transcription is the process in which medical information or diagnosis about a patient is transcribed from recorded voice to text format. It is the manual processing of voice reports dictated by physicians and other health care professionals. Doctors record their medical opinion about a patient's condition using a voice recording device. These recordings are then sent to a transcription service agency where trained professionals listen to the recordings and save them as regular text which is stored for later retrieval and use. Once it has been converted to text, it is searchable and also can add later analysis by doctors or other medical professionals. The equipment used in Medical Transcription is called as medical transcriber.

Professionals in this field are known as medical transcriptionist. Medical transcriptionists work is to hear and edit it, transform it or make it logical without changing relevant details or medical information into text format. Medical transcriptionists are skilled typist..


Basic Knowledge, Skills, Responsibilities are

1. Knowledge of medical terminology.

2. Knowledge of anatomy and physiology.

3. Knowledge of disease processes.

4. Knowledge of medical style and grammar.

5. Above-average spelling, grammar, communication and memory skills.

6. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.

7. Records maintenance skills or ability.

8. Accurately transcribes the patient-identifying information such as name and Medical     record.

9. Transcribes accurately, utilizing correct punctuation, grammar and spelling, and edits for     inconsistencies.

10.Maintains/consults references for medical procedures and terminology.

11.Keeps a transcription log.

 

Employment

Medical Transcriptionists are employed in hospitals, insurance companies, medical facilities, health care industry, departments that supply the recordings and they can work from home also. Graduates are involved in typing history and physical reports, clinic notes, office notes, operative reports, consultation notes, discharge summaries, letters, psychiatric evaluations, laboratory reports, x-ray reports and pathology reports of the patients. Medical Transcription is one of the fastest growing fields in health care department.
