Marine & Ocean Engineering  

Marine Engineering is the operation and support of the systems and equipment that control marine vessels and also includes operation and support to the engineering of boats, ships, oil rigs and any other marine vessel. Marine Engineering refers to two departments Engineering of vessel propulsion system and Engineering of structures to support vessels. Engineering of vessel Propulsion includes mechanism used to generate thrust to move ship or boat across water and Engineering of structures to support vessels is the design of structures which support ship transport, fishing, coastal management or other marine activities.

Ocean Engineering is concerned with the design of electronic devices such as the remote sensing systems used by oceanographers and Ocean Engineering is a multidisciplinary engineering field aimed at solving engineering problems associated with working in the ocean environment and wisely exploring and harnessing the ocean’s resources. Ocean engineers design, build, operate and maintain ships, offshore structures and ocean technologies. Ocean engineers study the oceans to determine the effects of waves, currents and the salt water environment on ships and other marine vehicles and structures.

Specialty areas of Marine & Ocean Engineering

1. Ships and Other Water-Based Vessels.

2. Offshore and Ocean Bottom Structures.

3. Ocean Exploration (including design of submersible vehicles).

4. Ocean Structures (offshore drilling platforms, ocean bottom structures, underwater     pipelines, etc.) .

5. Pollution Control (focusing on the coastline environment).

6. Wave Action Effects (on beaches, docks, harbor facilities, etc.) and Their     Prevention/Mitigation.



Marine & Ocean Engineers as a profession involves major commitment and dedication on the part of a Marine or Ocean Engineer because of the nature of the job. Marine & ocean Engineers work with oceanographers, biologists, geologists and geophysicists in creating tools and devices to help with research projects. These devices may be used to sense underwater objects and seafloor formations, measure underwater earthquake activity or study tides. A Marine & ocean engineer is responsible for the design, plan and development of devices used by oceanographers and marine biologists. Jobs are often found in the government, military, oil, conservation or navigation industries, as well as with private companies.
