Library science is basically the study of library. Library science includes several branches, including public services, technical services and administration. Libraries have been regarded as hub for knowledge which gives the information and entertainment needs of masses. Library science is a field that applies the practices, education, perspectives, tools of management, information technology. Library science is the profession which takes care of organizing, maintenance and storage of books in a library.

Graduates who specialize in this field are known as Librarians, Librarians are those who assist people in finding books and information in the library. Library is a collection of books, periodicals, newspapers, manuscripts, films, maps, prints, documents, microform, CDs, cassettes, videotapes, DVDs, e-books, audiobooks, databases, and other formats. Library is organized for use and maintained by a public body, an institution, a corporation, or a private individual.


Types of Libraries

Public (Covers issues such as cataloging; collection development for a diverse community)


School (Covers library services for children in schools through secondary school.)


Academic (Covers library services for colleges and universities)


Archives (librarians specially trained to maintain and build archives of records intended for historical preservation)


Specia (Special librarians include almost any other form of librarianship, including those who serve in medical libraries)


Preservation (include binding, conservation, digital and analog reformatting, digital preservation, and environmental monitoring)

 

Course and Eligibility

1. Student must pass higher secondary education or 10+2 with any subject to get     admission into bachelor’s degree program.

2. B.Sc. in Library Science ( 1 year ).

3. M.Sc. in Library Science ( 1 year ).

 

Employment

Graduates of Library Science are employed in Schools, colleges, Universities and other academic institutions, Media houses, News agencies and news groups, Private organizations and special libraries, Information centers, Documentation centers, large companies and organization with huge information handling requirements.
