Biotechnology Engineering  

Biotechnology Engineering is not a unique technology. It is a combination of technologies that share two (common) characteristics working with living cells and their molecules and having a wide range of practice and use can improve our lives. The definition of biotechnology is application of organism, cellular, subcellular or molecular components in order to provide goods, services and environmental management. The biotechnology concept involves a wide range of procedures for modifying living organisms according to requirements of human beings like domestication of animals, cultivation of plants etc.

Biotechnology draws on the pure biological sciences (genetics, microbiology, animal cell culture, molecular biology, biochemistry, embryology, cell biology) and in many instances it is also dependent on Knowledge and methods from outside the sphere of biology (chemical engineering, bioprocess Engineering, information technology, and bio robotics).

Some Special Branches of Bio- Technology

Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary field which addresses biological problems using computational techniques and makes the rapid organization and analysis of biological data possible.

Green biotechnology is biotechnology applied to agricultural processes.

Red biotechnology is applied to medical processes. Some examples are the designing of organisms to produce antibiotics and the engineering of genetic cures through genetic manipulation.

White biotechnology also known as industrial biotechnology, is biotechnology applied to industrial processes. An example is the designing of an organism to produce a useful chemical.

Bio-Technology students are employed in industry, in hospitals, in research department of educational and medical institutions and in government regulatory agencies. In industry, they may create designs where an in-depth understanding of living systems and of technology is essential. They may be involved in performance testing of new or proposed products. In research institutions, Bio-technology engineers supervise laboratories and equipment and participate in or direct research activities in collaboration with other researchers with such backgrounds as medicine, physiology and nursing. Some biotechnology engineers are technical advisors for marketing departments of companies and some are in management positions.
