Bioinformatics is the applications of computer technologies to the biological sciences, particularly genomics, with the object of discovering knowledge. Biological science deals with the storing, retrieving and analyzing biological data which are applied to gene-based drug discovery and development. Bioinformatics is conceptualizing biology in terms and then applying informatics techniques to understand and organize the information associated with these molecules, on a large-scale. Bioinformatics includes computational, mathematical and statistical methods to study, organize, analyze and interpret biological information, at the molecular, genetic and genomic levels. It helps to produce better preventive medicines and produce high yield low maintenance varieties of seeds.

The science of Bioinformatics, which is the melding of molecular biology with computer science, is essential to the use of genomic information in understanding human diseases and in the identification of new molecular targets for drug discovery. Bioinformatics incorporates the development of database to store the search data, and of statistical tools and algorithms to analyze and determine relationship between biological data sets, such as macromolecular sequences, structures, expression profiles and biochemical pathways. Software tools and technologies in the bio-informatics include Java, XML, Perl, C, C++, Ruby, Python, MySQL, SQL, CUDA, MATLAB and Microsoft Excel.
